We often see "air holes" on coffee bags, which can be called one-way exhaust valves. Do you know what it does?
SINGLE EXHAUST VALVE
This is a small air valve that only allows for outflow and not inflow. When the pressure inside the bag is higher than the pressure outside the bag, the valve will automatically open; When the pressure inside the bag decreases to insufficient to open the valve, the valve will automatically close.
The coffee bean bag with a one-way exhaust valve will cause the carbon dioxide released by the coffee beans to sink, thereby squeezing out lighter oxygen and nitrogen from the bag. Just as a sliced apple turns yellow when exposed to oxygen, coffee beans also begin to undergo a qualitative change when exposed to oxygen. To prevent these qualitative factors, packaging with a one-way exhaust valve is the correct choice.
After roasting, coffee beans will continuously release several times their own volume of carbon dioxide. In order to prevent the coffee packaging from bursting and isolate it from sunlight and oxygen, a one-way exhaust valve has been designed on the coffee packaging bag to discharge excess carbon dioxide from the outside of the bag and block moisture and oxygen from entering the bag, avoiding the oxidation of coffee beans and the rapid release of aroma, thus maximizing the freshness of coffee beans.
Coffee beans cannot be stored in this way:
The storage of coffee requires two conditions: avoiding light and using a one-way valve. Some of the error examples listed in the above picture include plastic, glass, ceramic, and tinplate devices. Even if they can achieve good sealing, the chemical substances between coffee beans/powder will still interact with each other, so it cannot guarantee that the coffee flavor will not be lost.
Although some coffee shops also place glass jars containing coffee beans, this is purely for decoration or display, and the beans inside are not edible.
The quality of one-way breathable valves on the market varies. Once oxygen comes into contact with coffee beans, they begin to age and reduce their freshness.
Generally speaking, the flavor of coffee beans can only last for 2-3 weeks, with a maximum of 1 month, so we can also consider the shelf life of coffee beans to be 1 month. Therefore, it is recommended to use high-quality coffee packaging bags during the storage of coffee beans to prolong the aroma of the coffee!
