Polylactic acid, also known as PLA (Polylactic Acid), is a polymer obtained by polymerizing lactic acid as the main raw material. The source of the raw material is sufficient mainly from corn, cassava,etc..The production process of PLA is pollution-free, and the product can be biodegraded and recycled in nature.
Advantages of PLA
1.Biodegradability: After PLA is discarded, it can be completely degraded into water and carbon dioxide under specific conditions,and re-enter the natural circulation, avoiding the long-term pollution to the environment caused by traditional plastics.
2.Renewable resources: PLA is mainly polymerized from lactic acid extracted from corn starch, sugarcane and other crops, which are renewable resources,and reduce dependence on petroleum resources.
3. It has good air permeability, oxygen permeability and carbon dioxide permeability, it also has the property of isolating odor. Viruses and molds tend to adhere to the surface of biodegradable plastics, so there are concerns about safety and hygiene. However,PLA is the only biodegradable plastic with excellent anti-bacterial and anti-mold properties.
Degradation mechanism of PLA
1.Hydrolysis: The ester group of the main chain is broken, thus reducing the molecular weight.
2.Thermal decomposition: a complex phenomenon that leads to the emergence of different compounds, such as lighter molecules and linear and cyclic oligomers with different molecular weights, as well as lactide.
3.Photodegradation: Ultraviolet radiation can cause degradation. This is a major factor in the exposure of PLA to sunlight in plastics, packaging containers, and film applications.
Application of PLA in the packaging field
PLA materials are used in a wide range of fields. In the packaging industry, PLA film is mostly used in the outer packaging of food, beverage and drugs to replace the traditional plastic packaging, in order to achieve the purpose of environmental protection and sustainable.
